Announcing "100 blogs in 100 days" {1}

When I was in high school I wrote in my journal each and every day. If I missed a day I felt like something was missing. Blogging is a lot like journaling because it's an account of the events, thoughts, ideas, inspirations and reactions to our world. Except this blog just happens to be public, and happens to only be about photography, weddings, and business. Starting today, New Years Eve, I will post a blog every single day until April 9, 2011. All in all it will be 100 blogs in 100 days. Crazy you think? I think so too. That's a LOT of blogging. Although, I never regret the research and thought and writing I put into each one. Blogs are so fun to look back on; I get to learn and explore and others hopefully can learn and enjoy the blogs too.

In the next few months you can expect to hear about various wedding experiences, I may feature a photo of the day, give wedding advice, discuss aspects of photography, aspects of business, interview brides, interview wives, interview vendors + much more :)

see.you.tomorrow!

Fun Times With Family

Karen contacted me to take her family's photos while her parents and her sister was in town from western Washington over Thanksgiving weekend. It was a little chilly outside in the snow but with the sunset it made for very cute pictures! I love the raspberry and green colors coordinated in their outfits:

Behind the Lens:: Part 1

When I was first getting going as a photographer I was always so curious about how other photographers chose their lenses for different shoots, how they determined their camera settings for varying circumstances, and how they achieved a certain "look" that they had envisioned. After much practice, experience, and exploration I have realized that there are many ways to capture a shot, there is no perfect lens, and there is no perfect formula. ALTHOUGH, we have found a system that works well for us, and I'm happy to share some tidbits of information with you to feed the curiosity that you may have :)

To other photographers and future brides wondering about wedding photography: here's a look into what's going on for 30 seconds on a wedding day.

Who: Bryan and Melissa's Wedding
What: posed individual bridal party shots
When: August 2010, 2 hours before the ceremony
Where: Camp Ghormley, Forrest setting
Weather: comfortable temp, overcast, about to rain
More Info: We took 1 hour to do photos of the whole bridal party, just the guys, just the girls, and all the individual photos. We spent about 25 minutes wandering around to different locations with the whole bridal party, and then finished up doing just guys/girls and individuals in two nearby spots.
Why: We like to do a close up shot, a full body formal shot, and a silly shot for each person in the bridal party so that they have a few to choose from. Since there are two photographers, we can use two different lenses, utilize both natural light and flashes, and quickly work well together to get a lot of shots in a short amount of time.
Post Processing: Edited in lightroom for color and exposure adjustments

Photo #1: taken by Amy, Canon 5D mk ii, 70-200mm lens, natural light
Manual camera settings: f/3.2, 1/160 sec., ISO-100, auto WB, Focal length 123mm, center focus

Photo #2/3: taken by Tavis, Canon 5D mk ii, 16-35mm lens, pocket wizard flash system
Manual camera settings: f/4, 1/160 sec., ISO-125, Focal length 35mm, center focus

Fun Yakima Family Photos

With most family shoots it's an adventure just trying to get the young kids to look at us, and we're really lucky if we can catch them all looking AND smiling at the same time. But this family session was the portrait session from heaven. There were 7 people all together, with 5 kids under 10 that were STINKIN CUTE!! You can see for yourself:

Senior Pictures in Yakima

Name: Megan D.
School: West Valley High School, Class of 2011
Senior Photo Spots: downtown Yakima, Yakima Arboretum

It just happened to be 15 degrees the day of this shoot, but Megan pulled it off well. Tavis and I are out there completely bundled with pocket warmers, and she's just dressed in normal clothes freezing her buns off! For this shoot we took photos at one spot, warmed up in the car for a minute, went to another spot, warmed up again.... It wasn't the normal wandering around photo shoot, we definitely picked our spots from the car and then tried to hurry so we could hop back in!

Here are my favorite snowy senior pics:

Suncadia Wedding Photos!

Rachel & Josh got married on a beautiful {cold} November day at Suncadia! The views at this venue are all breathtaking, but the snow just adds even more to these photographs.

It was snowing in the morning while the girls were getting ready and everyone kept hoping it would stop in time for pictures.... It let up a little during the portrait session, but we still had some snow to get awesome shots like this::

Their ceremony & reception were at the Inn, but the shuttle took us to the lodge and also to Swiftwater Cellars for photos. Some of my favorite shots of the day were in the basement of the winery. Such a great atmosphere, and really unique for photos.

I'm in the mood for blogging

November happened to be an abnormally busy month for us, with more weddings than usual, and more last minute portrait sessions than normal. Once again, I did blog as much as I would have liked to, but I'm back!

One of my besties from high school, Amanda Laplante, just got married in May and we shot her wedding in Pullman. She and two of her bridesmaids (Stephanie & Jocelyn) have a blog:: lemontree3.com. Stephanie got married in August and we shot her wedding in Spokane, and now recently we had the opportunity to shoot Jocelyn's family pictures with pretty fall colors in Yakima! So now I can say we have photographed all parts of the lemon tree 3 :)

highlights from this shoot:

1) Acting ridiculous for the sake of making Howard smile:

2) photographing fun family interactions

3) seeing all of Jocelyn's family coordinated outfits

4) getting to know Jocelyn & her family more

The first half of their shoot was at the Arboredum, and then we also did some in downtown Yakima with just Jocelyn & her husband while Howie slept. They're celebrating 5 years of marriage so they wanted some more couple-y pictures like they did when they were engaged :)
